MHS Art Teacher Joel Ryser Selected as I Like Illinois Artist of the Month

Congratulations to Joel Ryser for his selection as the Artist of the Month!

The staff of Illinois Senate President John Cullerton has created a nonpartisan website called I Like Illinois where they highlight the good things that happen in our state, as well as drawing attention to interesting people, places, and history related to Illinois.

One of their most popular features is an Artist of the Month article, where they interview an Illinois-based artist and feature some of his or her work. They are featuring Joel Ryser as the March Artist of the Month on the I Like Illinois page!

You may access this page on this link:

MEA Member Wins Art Award

Congratulations to MEA Member, Joel Ryser (MHS), a 2014 recipient of the Lloyd Schoeneman Community Impact Award from Quad City Arts. Joel won in the category of Established Artist for “making a significant contribution to the arts community.”

As chairman of the Fine Arts Department at Moline High School, Mr. Ryser recently opened a glass art
studio in downtown Davenport called Hot Glass.

According to a nomination, he put in “countless hours bringing his vision to actuality as he started the studio from scratch.” Mr. Ryser offers classes and workshops for everyone, from businesses looking for team-building exercises, to at-risk youth in need of positive reinforcement and mentoring.

The award was named for Lloyd Schoeneman (1951-2001) who began his career with Quad City Arts Council in 1978. He worked tirelessly for the organization and was a driving force for art and artists in our community. Quad City Arts went through many changes over the years, but Lloyd was a constant source of leadership and creativity. He is missed throughout the community. In his memory, Quad City Arts recognizes exceptional leaders in the arts community. Each year, nominations are sought in late summer, and awards are presented at Quad City Arts’ annual meeting.
